Sticky Note Series

This is a series that was created from a time of a lot of anxiety. The time I needed help, and realized the validity of mental health. From a time I was dealing with mental struggles. My therapist suggested I place sticky notes on my bathroom mirrors with affirmations to get me in a better head space. I did this to the point I almost ran out of viewable surface, and until I started to change my perception on my situation. I took this experience into my own work for my solo show “Someone-Somewhere”. In that show I created multiple works by using the body panels of VW Beetles. A vehicle that plays a significant role in my childhood, and now a “canvas” for my imagination.

This particular series was created from two VW Beetle roof sections cut up into 40 squares. On them I added wooden carved quotes both in Spanish and English, similar to the ones that I once placed on my bathroom mirrors. The decorative pieces adorning each piece were made up from left over scraps from pieces created over the years. This as a symbol of finding a second chance and giving these left over pieces another opportunity to be showcased. Something I was seeking myself on my journey back to stability.

The installation of this series incorporated the mirrors from my bathroom. Now a center piece in my show, and surrounded by the art pieces that inspired this self affirmative action. I wanted to bring in the viewer to this experience and during the whole show, people were invited to write their own encouraging messages with the provided sticky notes and sharpies. This was a full experience that brought people into my own experience, and inspiration while being upfront and candid about my journey to show that were are only human doing the best we can with our own situations.
